Diesel fuel in general is any liquid fuel used in diesel engines, whose fuel ignition takes place, without spark, as a result of compression of the inlet air mixture and then injection of fuel.

The most common type of diesel fuel is a specific fractional distillate of petroleum fuel oil, but alternatives that are not derived from petroleum, such as biodiesel, biomass to liquid (BTL) or gas to liquid (GTL) diesel, are increasingly being developed and adopted. To distinguish these types, petroleum-derived diesel is increasingly called petrodiesel.

Ultra-low-sulfur diesel (ULSD) is a standard for defining diesel fuel with substantially lowered sulfur contents. As of 2006, almost all of the petroleum-based diesel fuel available in UK, Europe and North America is of a ULSD type.

Diesel fuels are blended to provide good ignition quality and are held to high quality standards. Their low-temperature fluidity characteristics can also help keep vehicles moving in colder temperatures.

Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel is made to meet the needs of the most demanding customers. This diesel fuel is formulated for use in any diesel-fueled vehicle on the road today.

Diesel is different from gasoline

Diesel and gasoline are both derived from crude oil, they work similarly, but are not interchangeable. Both fuels are normally injected under high temperature and pressure, however, diesel ignites by the high pressure and temperature while gasoline ignition is set by the spark plug.

Diesel fuel requires less energy to produce than gasoline. Because diesel has a higher energy density it provides better fuel economy compared to gasoline.

Diesel is adjusted for cold temperatures made readily available throughout areas experience temperatures below 10 degrees F.

Storage

If you keep it clean, cool and dry, diesel fuel can be stored 6 months without significant quality degradation. Storing diesel for longer periods of time can be accomplished by using periodic filtrations and adding fuel stabilizers and biocides.

Parts Per Million (PPM)
